All About SSC CGL Exam - New Pattern, Previous Year's Cut-offs & More


What is SSC?

The Staff Selection Commission or the SSC is the body responsible for the entire process of recruitment for different jobs with the Indian government agencies and establishments. The SSC conducts exams for candidates from different educational backgrounds to recruit candidates for various government jobs.

What is SSC CGL Exam?

SSC CGL refers to the Combined Graduate Level Exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission. It is an exam conducted by the commission to process the recruitments for candidates who fall under Group B and Group C categories. It is one of the most coveted exams in the country with more than 17 lakh people appearing for it in the year 2015 with salaries starting from a minimum of around Rs.43000 per month after the 7th pay commission and varying based on the place of posting.

The SSC's latest update on their website has announced that the date of the CGL Exam Tier -1 for this year will be conducted on August 27, 2016.  This exam is for the 3300+ job vacancies (as of today) with the government. The Commission has also made some changes in the pattern of Tier-I and Tier-III examinations for this year.

SSC CGL Category wise Cut-offs for the Year 2015 

The table below shows the cut-offs for last year's exam for each category. Please note that these cutoffs are just for qualifying for Tier 2. The marks of the candidates chosen finally can vary for different posts based on the requirements and competition.

Since the change is not drastic, the expected cutoffs for 2016 SSC CGLE is also expected to be in the same range as last year cutoffs.

This section consists of three different papers. The number of papers to be attempted by a candidate varies depending on the position that the candidate has applied for.  The table below shows the pattern for Tier - 2 Exam.

General Awareness: Awareness of the environment and its effects on society, current affairs, matters pertaining to India and its neighbouring countries pertaining to History, Politics, Economics, Geography, and Scientific Research.

Quantitative Aptitude: Algebra, Arithmetic, Geometry, Trigonometry, Mensuration, and Statistical Charts.

English Comprehension: Grammar, synonyms, antonyms, direct and indirect speech, active and passive voices, misspelt words, jumbled words/sentences, and comprehension passage.
