SSC CGL 2017 Exam Pattern, Syllabus & Important Topics


SSC Combined Graduate Level is undoubtedly the most prestigious among all recruitment exams that the SSC conducts every year. Successfully clearing SSC CGL will hand you a government job along with all the perks associated with it - Job security, Ample allowances, Excellent work-life balance, Exposure and a sizeable pension.

But the journey to bagging a central government job is not going to be easy. With over 18 lakh candidates expected to apply for a few thousand vacancies, the competition’s going to be really stiff. Only the candidates who are best prepared and who do well in all the phases of the exam are going to make the final draw.

The first step to your preparation is to thoroughly understand the exam pattern, syllabus and important topics for all tiers of the exam. The exam will be conducted in 4 tiers.

This time around, SSC has brought in a few changes to the exam pattern. Let us first see what those changes are:-

  1. SSC will be conducting both Tier I and Tier II exams in online mode.
  2. The time duration for Tier I exam is only 60 minutes. Earlier, it was 75 minutes. Tier II pattern is unchanged.
  3. Tier III will be a descriptive paper in English/Hindi.
  4. For a few posts, Computer Proficiency test (CPT) is now an essential hurdle to pass. These posts are - Assistant Section Officer (CSS), Assistant Section Officer (MEA), Assistant (GSI) in Ministry of Mines and Assistants in Serious Fraud Investigation Agency.

SSC CGL Tier-I

SSC CGL Tier-I exam is mandatory for all posts. Its marks will be added for further stages as well. You will have to clear Tier-I in order to attempt the Tier-II exam. The following is the exam pattern:-

Important topics:-

#1 Data Interpretation

Questions would be based on bar/line graphs, tables and pie charts. It is easy to score in this section, provided you follow the steps carefully.

#2 Coding & Decoding

Questions would be based on letter shifting and word analogy. This is another topic to focus on in order to score well in the exam.

#3 Sentence Correction

You can expect a total of 5 questions from this section. The questions would be based on grammar and vocabulary.

SSC CGL Tier-II

SSC CGL 2017 Tier-II exam would involve 2 papers - Quantitative aptitude & General English.

The syllabus for Tier-II is similar to the one for Tier-I exam. In the General English section, there are 2 extra topics - Active & Passive Voice and Cloze Test.

SSC CGL Tier-III

SSC CGL Tier-III exam contains a descriptive test for the duration of 1 hr.

This exam will be conducted offline in pen and paper mode. Questions would involve Essay/Formal letter/Informal letter/Report Writing. It is key that your work has zero or close to zero grammatical or spelling mistakes.

SSC CGL Tier-IV

Tier IV is conducted only for a few selected posts. It would involve a Computer Proficiency Test or a Data Entry Skill Test. The Data Entry skill test is conducted for the post of Tax assistants while the Computer Proficiency Test is for the post of Assistant Section Officer.  The Computer Proficiency Test will have different questions on Word Processing, Spread Sheets and generation of slides.
